Seychelles Life to help Real Maldives Sports Club

10th April 2017

Challengers: The Real Maldives squad and trainers
Challengers: The Real Maldives squad and trainers

Sport has always been a passion in my life and I truly believe that it can make the world a better place.

So, during my recent trip to the Seychelles, I decided to put my money where my mouth is and help a football club, the Real Maldives.

I want to make a difference and in giving the players some financial backing I aim to encourage their overall sporting prowess and hopefully see them go higher in the football league.

There is a lot to be done but I can see the potential in the youngsters.

I spent time with them during a training session and I was impressed.

It was a very good evening.

I met with their coach, Don Anacoura, who has captained the Seychelles national team and starred with St Michel. He is working extremely hard for them and has done a remarkable job.

I was introduced to the boys and girls of Real Maldives by Gilbert Elisa, a good friend of mine in the UK, and Mrs Stella Afif, who is doing excellent work for the club.

As we all know, the standard of football in Seychelles is at a low level, but I think that with my personal knowledge and support, we will be able to achieve improvements.

During my younger days I also played at the highest level and in the 1970s captained the Seychelles national team.

It was a great honour and a moment I shall never forget.

Today, I want to see the same opportunities offered to the younger generation.

I want to give something back to the game I love.

I can share my ideas, offer advice and knowledge, and play an important role in the club to make a difference.

There are dedicated youngsters in the squad and with proper guidance they could become fantastic players in the near future.

We need to advise them to ensure they progress.

Some things you can't take for granted,. During my meeting with the boys, I felt the need to tell them to take their training seriously and warned them avoid getting involved in drugs and alcohol.

I later watched them played against Victoria City at the Unity Stadium.

Yes, there is great hope out there. Let's see how we can make it all work.
