Coup victims have their plight broadcast online, but was President Ramkalawan listening?
By Lewis Betsy
It was good to have a meeting of the TRNUC Victims’ Association broadcast globally online and hear what was said. Indeed, I hope President Ramkalawan took note.
Association officials Regis Francourt and Barry Laine put the victims’ case forcibly and left no doubt what they see as the best outcome for all concerned.
I did note that there were not many victims at the meeting, held on March 15. But it has always been the case that many won’t turn up because they are scared of a backlash.
Rightly or wrongly, they fear that by showing their faces they will not get the compensation they are due.
Many of the victims, of course, are now, like myself, living abroad in places such as the UK, Canada, USA, Australia, and Italy.
Communication at times like this is vital and that is why the internet can be such a useful device.
The meeting was promoted with the words, “The time has come to bring closure to the 1977 Coup D’etat.”
Well, that is a great aim, but I fear too ambitious at this moment.
With the Ramkalawan administration I believe there is a cynical ploy at work. I fear they are playing politics with the victims.
But we fight on.
There is a great deal more to do to ensure justice is served.
